Andrew Wexler, MD, MA FACS

Surgical Care in Low-Resource Settings: The Realities

Dr Wexler graduated from Dartmouth College and Boston University Medical School.

He completed his General Surgery Training at the University of Massachusetts and his Plastic Surgery training at UCLA He served as a Chief of Plastic Surgery and Regional Director for Craniofacial Services for Southern California Kaiser Permanente and held the appointment of a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at USC.

For over 30 years Dr Wexler has provided reconstructive surgical care to children and adults in over 25 different low resource countries.

He is a former President of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons and a recipient of their Lifetime Achievement award for his contributions to the field of Maxillofacial Surgery.


Janet K.Thomason

Global Impact with Project CURE: a Forbes top twenty Charity

No stranger to the world of nonprofits, Janet has a diverse history of experience in nonprofit management and board development. Currently, she serves Project C.U.R.E. as the Director of National Procurement and is responsible for building relationships with manufacturers, distributors, and medical facilities to secure the product donations that will ultimately help Project C.U.R.E. save lives in low-resourced countries. Each week, Project C.U.R.E. delivers four to five semi-truck loads of donated medical supplies and equipment to desperately needy people around the world. Under her direction, the organization has implemented numerous programs to strategically increase the supply of life-saving equipment available for countries in need. Approximately 200 cargo containers of equipment and supplies are shipped annually from Project C.U.R.E.’s seven distribution facilities.

Travels with Project C.U.R.E. have expanded Janet’s definition of ‘world traveler’ and have enriched her life in unexpected ways. She has dubbed herself the ‘Where’s Waldo’ of Project C.U.R.E. since you never know where she will turn up in pursuit of medical equipment and more.

An active member of the non-profit community both locally and globally; Mrs. Thomason serves on the San Jacinto College Biomedical Advisory Committee and is a board member of Houston’s Health Technology Management Association. In addition, she is currently a member representative, and past member of the Executive Board of The Partnership for Quality Medical Donations, a unique alliance of non-profit and corporate organizations committed to bringing measurable health impact to under-served and vulnerable people through active engagement with global partners and local communities.

A native Bostonian, Janet and her husband have lived in Houston for over 38 years, but you will often find her traveling across the U.S. and the world for Project C.U.R.E.

Nicholas Comninellis, MD, MPH, DIMPH

Launching Your International Healthcare Career

Nicholas Comninellis is President and Professor at INMED, the Institute for International Medicine. He also practices emergency medicine. Over a two-year period, Dr. Comninellis served inner-city citizens at Shanghai Charity Hospital. Over another two years, he led a healthcare ministry in the war-besieged nation of Angola in southern Africa. Dr. Comninellis next served for six years in the Kansas City public hospital before launching INMED in 2003.

He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) School of Medicine and Saint Louis University School of Public Health and was a family medicine resident at John Peter Smith Hospital. Dr. Comninellis also earned a diploma in tropical medicine from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and became board certified in both public health and family medicine. Among his authored books is Five Bags of Gold – a Modern Parable of Wealth, Responsibility, and Eternal Investment.

Dr. Comninellis is a classical guitarist and faculty co-advisor for UMKC Cru. He was recognized as the 2009 United Nations Association of the United States World Citizen and the 2015 University of Missouri-Kansas City Alumni of the Year.

Song Tan, MD, FAAP

Cambodian Health Professionals Association of America

Dr. Tan has been a Practicing Pediatrician in the US over the last 38 years. He attended Lycee Sisowath High School in Cambodia and passed the French Baccalaureate as well as the National Baccalaureate part II with the highest scores. He went on to attend the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Phnom Penh.

Being the sole survivor of his family in the Cambodian Genocide, he escaped to Thailand’s Khao-I-Dang refugee camp and resettled for a new life in the US in 1980. After completing his Pediatric Residency Training at the University of Hawai’i, he returned to Long Beach to practice Pediatrics.

A passionate advocate of health equity, Dr. Tan founded CHPAA 28 years ago to serve the community and led medical, surgical, and dental mission to provide free health care and free medication to the disadvantage people back home in Cambodia.

He served as mentor, instructor and preceptor to numerous future physicians, physician-assistants and nurse practitioners, as they made clinical rotation or shadowed him through his busy pediatric practice. He is a speaker at multiple health forums for the community. He gave Grand Rounds to Physicians, Residents and Medical Students about the challenges of culturally competent care for Cambodian patients.

An avid hiker, Dr. Tan has hiked most of the local mountains including San Gorgonio, San Jacinto, Mt. Baldy, Half-Dome of Yosemite. His most memorable trek was his epic journey to the majestic and mythical Himalayas in Nepal, reaching Kalapatar and Mt. Everest Base Camp in 2008.
