Day 3

Daniel Murariu, MD, MPH, MBA, FACS

Sustainable Medical Missions: Reverence for Romanian Roots

Daniel , double boarded in plastic as well as reconstructive surgeries, was born in Romania and grew up in the US.

In 2006, he began to foster a new mindset in the Romanian medical community in underserved and rural parts of the country, teaching multi-faceted approach which was quite different from the”silo” approach of the Soviet era. Daniel worked side by side with young Romanian physicians who now practice his techniques all over the country.

Daniel is the founder of Fundatia Daniel Murariu (Daniel Murariu Foundation) under which he organizes medical missions as well as fosters surgical and reconstructive training to empower his Romanian counterparts.

He is the recipient of numerous accolades …..the State of Hawaii Proclamation for Humanitarian Service…… several awards from Sunset Rotary District 5000 including their “International Service” award and the “Jerry Chang Peacemaker” award…and in his TED talk, “How to Approach Medical Missions”, Daniel professes “teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”.

Tim R. Randolph, PhD, MLS(ASCP), SMNAI

Integrating Research and Sustainability into Medical Missions

Tim’s first trip to Haiti in 1999 with FOHO (Friends of Haiti Organization) to build a school in a mountain community led him to investigate other needs in the country.

In 2000, Tim, a hematologist by profession, began consulting work with one medical clinic there which eventually laid the groundwork for Randolph World Ministries , which now connects with twenty small medical centers throughout the country.

Tim focuses on laboratory medicine tailored to the low resource environments in which he has chosen to practice, both in Haiti and in Africa.

He is actively developing low cost diagnostic methods including “Sickle Cell Confirm”, HbF assay, and the Falling Drop Hemoglobin Method among others.

He currently returns to Haiti at least twice a year to continue his work there, to maintain quality relationships and promote the sustainability of his projects.

Br. John David Scheibner, C.F. R

The Blessing and Challenge of Receiving Foreign Medical Teams

Brother John David Scheibner is currently the brother in charge of the daily functions at the San Benito José Centro de Medico in Comayagua, Honduras.

He is the central figure who coordinates his staff in the hospital administration offices of the small but mighty medical center, overseeing its daily functions with steadiness and dedication.

It is to this medical center that six separate medical mission groups travel each year (some two or three times a year) to donate their time, equipment and medical expertise.

Exquisite coordination is paramount to making a smooth transition for the mission groups from the time they land until they depart ten days later. The patients served in this center are screened ahead of time to ascertain their needs. Only the poorest of the poor are served here. If a patient is able to pay for his care, he is referred to the government hospital.

Literally months of preparation is required to coordinate patients’ needs with the availability of medical assistance and it is this constant responsibility that Brother John David shoulders so well!
