Day 2

James Ham, MD, FACEP, FAAEM, FAWM

“Water, Hands, Hope” in Papua, New Guinea

James began his odyssey with a thought (what if?), and a GoFundMe campaign, and so his non-profit, “Water, Hands, Hope” was born in 2013.

Since then, he has brought medical care and education, ample numbers of prosthetic hands (lots of machete injuries where he goes….), clean water initiatives, and a healthy dose of compassion to multiple countries around the world that need not only basic medical and dental care but also clean water and hygiene education.

James’ philosophy is simple…make a project and figure it out!!!

In pursuit of these projects, James has worked in Nepal, Laos, Papua New Guinea, Bhutan, and other marvelous and diverse corners of the world.

Kathryn Tschiegg, RN, BBA

The Sustainable Counterpart Model and Its Impact

Kathy began her international career as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. As a young RN living and working in a very different world than the one “back home”, she encountered many difficult, disturbing, and heartbreaking situations. She left Honduras, never to return…

At least that was the plan…but she could not stop thinking about Honduras and the people she met there. So she went back to school for a business degree and founded CAMO (Central American Medical Outreach) in 1993.

CAMO now serves over 150,000 people annually by providing medical services, prosthetics, and training, and functions on what she calls her “counterpart” model of care. She believes in strengthening healthcare systems and supporting sustainable community development.

“Hope for the Forgotten” is an inspiring book she has written. Please check it out!!!
